3G Development in China March 9-15

- In continuation of its announcement to collaborate with leading mobile phone makers for TD-SCDMA phones, China Mobile recently announced that it will invest 600 million RMB (US$86.7 million; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) to help mobile phone makers develop better and cheaper TD-SCDMA phones, the China Daily reported. With an aim to boost the TD-SCDMA phone adoption, the cooperation will cover both domestic and foreign mobile phone makers, according to the same source, citing chairman of China Mobile, Wang Jianzhou.

- Chinese three leading telecom operators plan to inject approximately 100 billion RMB (US$14.6 billion) into 3G development in Zhejiang province over the next five years, according to the China Daily on March 9. Over the five-year period, China Mobile stated that it will pour 50 billion RMB (US$7.3 billion) in Zhejiang, which will generate around 100,000 jobs, while China Unicom is set to earmark a total of 20 billion RMB (US$2.92 billion) into the development of its mobile phone networks in the said province. Furthermore, China Telecom stated that it will inject between 20 billion (US$ 2.92 billion) to 30 billion RMB (US$4.38 billion) in Zhejiang as well.
